M.O. Free*Man is an abstraction, an assemblage comprising a human plus three machines: the Suno music-generating AI; Chat GPT as a song lyric writing assistant; and the Logic Pro digital audio workstation for sound engineering and music production. The three machines when put together constitute an amalgam; a multi-component musical instrument that is extremely powerful, and tremendously user-friendly. The Suno/Chat GPT/Logic amalgam is an amazingly efficient musical instrument that humans can use to generate entire songs from scratch, delivered quickly as a recorded song file.
Regardless of verbiage and nomenclature, the combination of the Suno, Chat GPT, and Logic Pro technologies represents a watershed moment for music and the music industry. It’s time to Get Ready.
The M.O. Free*Man amalgam utilizes many other machine parts as well, many of which are AIs or utilize AIs: Adobe Audacity, various AI search engines (e.g. Google AI), stock Logic Pro plug-ins, the Logic Pro AI stem splitter, the Logic Pro Mastering AI, Waves Audio plugins (Curves AQ, Greg Wells MixCentric, and PAZ Analyzer), numerous Universal Audio Digital UADx suite plugins, Soothe2 by Oeksound, IDX Intelligent Dynamics, and Plugin Alliance Brainworx_refinement.
Enough with the tech talk, what’s up with the music?
Good point, but for better or worse, much of M.O. Free*Man’s music is about the technology underlying that music. Even some of the songs whose lyrics don’t sound like they’re about AI song generation are actually about AI song generation and its implications.
But to get more down to Earth, M.O. Free*Man is based in South Georgia and Upstate New York, depending on the seasons. Much of the songwriting is about the American heartland… the sights, sounds, thoughts and feelings of that geographical region of the United States. There are Americana roots to just about every M.O. Free*Man song, however deeply hidden.
It must be said, however, that technologies largely developed on the coasts and shorelines of America, from California, Washington, New England, the Great Cities of the Great Lakes, and the Northeast Corridor, are a driver for the creativity of M.O. Free*Man. Similarly, in terms of the musicality of those regions: Funk, Grunge, Jazz, and Hard Rock infuse the groove for M.O.
Basically, M.O. Free*Man strives to make music that is great to listen to when you are driving around America in your car, or are riding on a bus, boat, train, or plane. OK, and when you’re hanging out in a bar as well. The great American pastimes.
What is M.O. Free*Man all about?
M.O. Free*Man is all about the application of AI machines to music production, especially as related to the following issues:
A focus on increased productivity, as illustrated by the first nine M.O. Free*Man albums. These first nine albums, containing 109 songs, were produced in 78 days in the living room of a restored farm house, using an Apple Laptop with a pair of headphones, and post-mix and mastering checked with a Bose car stereo while driving around the countryside in a Cadillac Escalade. See what I mean about music made for driving around?
A focus on increased convenience and decreased expense for aspiring songwriters and musicians, in terms of using AI tools to make Demos of songs they have written, and for producing their first albums. In many ways Suno is like a collection of excellent musicians, along with a top-notch vocalist, to use as session artists at virtually no cost when producing Demo songs, or getting that first (second, …ninth) album out the door.
M.O. is deeply interested in the idea of using Turing Tests to assess the capabilities of current and future music-generating AI systems. This is the basis for the six-album Turing Test series of songs and albums, obviously, as specifically related to Suno.
As a lover of artistic freedom, M.O. Free*Man hopes to catalyze expanding the opportunities for use of AI by individuals with physical and psychological differences, i.e. those that are differently abled. The rise of AI-assisted music creation creates an opportunity to expand the breadth of personalities and physical body types that can enjoy the creation of music. Sonic art can now be generated with great facility by individuals who are physically unable to play a “typical” musical instrument. It will be wonderful to witness the creativity and musical beauty those minds are capable of bringing into existence, through the use of AI-generated sonic art.
Finally, M.O. likes to dig deep and go under the hood; working toward understanding, expanding, and improving AI technology per se. Specifically through application of neurobiological principles, and our understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms of human learning, memory, and creativity, in order to develop new AI architectures. This thread runs through the three “stand alone” M.O. Free*Man albums: AI Is My Instrument; Your AI Is Incomplete; and Sonic Art.
